Crime wise there is not much of a difference, they are both bad, weather wise, you are going to feel the heat and humidity, entertainment is better in Houston, and more time out of the year to go out,the one thing that you are really going to miss,is the changing of the seasons, especially the snowy days around Christmas time.

First tip… don't tell everyone you're from New Jersey. I mean, if they ask that's fine, but don't do the, "Hey yo, I'm Vinnie from Jersey" while grabbing your crotch thing that "Guido's" do. Second tip… don't tell locals that New Jersey is better.
Third tip… ask locals about Houston and Texas. They'd be glad to give you all kinds of information and lore about this state. Texans are a very proud people, even the adopted ones.
Fourth tip… unless you wear one all the time, don't go out and buy a Stetson. Unless you hang out at Midnight Rodeo on the weekends, they aren't necessary.
I was in NJ over Easter weekend. I was amazed at the amount of graffiti everywhere. Is there some unwritten, "If it doesn't move, paint it" rule? Crime is, for the most part, lower here. However, we still have about 100,000 Katrina "victims" and they just won't leave… and most of them don't want to find jobs either. There are a few areas you don't want to move to, but otherwise you'll be fine. Gangs aren't as bad as people say.
Yes, it is hot here. We know it. We'll even tell you, "Man, it's a warm one." Houston is very humid, too. Our winters last about three weeks, so you probably won't need about 75% of your winter wardrobe.
Have a car. Keep it in good shape. You'll need it. This is a big city and it was designed for cars. Some (like AJ_lets_go_shopping) whine about this. Just a fact of life that won't change. Oh, speaking of cars, do NOT use full-service gas pumps. Most are self-serve. Full serve costs about 50 cents more a gallon to do what stations up north do. Why? Because they can get away with it.
Good housing is cheap, compared to NJ. $200K will buy you a shack in Garwood on a postage stamp sized property. Here it will buy you a five bedroom home on a quarter acre.
Texas is a right-to-work state, and unions are not very popular unless you are a firefighter or a cop. Don't try to organize one here.
If you have any more questions, just ask.

Move back to NJ. It's boring here. Houston is a wannabe NYC anyway. Or go ahead and come here if you like cowboy hats and southern accents.

Every place has it's advantages and disadvantages but the trick is to make the most of where you are. I moved to Houston in 2001 and the things I learnt are:
* Texans are very proud of their state which I personally found to be a good thing. I now live in Las Vegas due to a job move last Christmas where everyone is from somewhere else and there is no sense of identity as a result. Go and visit the San Jacinto Monument for some real background of Texas history. I could also recommend reading abook called "Passionate Nation: The Epic History of Texas" by James L Haley. It will give you a good background into Texas history in general.
* A popular saying is "Don't Mess with Texas" – heed the warning!
* Houston has a great theater district, so if you are into culture there is always something to do – independent film, ballet, music, shows
* There are some great restaurants but be warned that portion sizes are normally huge and although barbeque is good don't eat too much of it. Houston is always near the top of the list as one of the fattest cities in America.
* The secret behind a good margarita is using good tequila. The difference in taste is very noticeable.
* Housing is cheap compared to other major cities. Silverlake and Shadow Creek Ranch are only 20 minute drive from downtown (up to 45 minutes in rush hour) on highway 288 and have new housing and infrastructure popping up everywhere. Check it out if you are after a new house.
* There is a distinct lack of public transport – people drive everywhere
* Some counties are "semi-dry". You can only buy beer < 5% in supermarkets (no liquor stores) and you cannot buy beer before 12pm on Sundays. Brazoria county is an example.
* Houston is interesting in that there are many churches there and also many strip bars.
* There are many very good golf courses which do not cost a lot of money for a round. Be warned that you will need to get a very early tee time because it becomes unbearably hot and humid later in the day.
* Houston is a great sports town – major league football, baseball and basketball as well as a AAA hockey team. Personally I loved going to the baseball as Minute Maid Park is a family friendly air conditioned stadium
* As with moving to any place get involved in some type of community group or activity – a church, sporting team or something similar. It makes fitting in a lot easier.

Get a wardrobe that will suit you well in a sauna, as Houston is on a major inlet to the Gulf of Mexico. I don't think that their humidity level ever drops below 80%. Houston is a Texas city so don't mention you are a Yankee! If you are a Urban Professional Houston will be okay. It is one of the worst cities in the US to be stuck in traffic during peak hours. Downtown Houston is difficult to negotiate if you don't know where you're going exactly. If you have a choice to move outside of Houston, like Katy. I hope you enjoy TEXAS! (I live in San Antonio and have visited Houston several times.)
